090711, Wednesday, a rewarding walk

Went for a walk this morning, my regular route along the main road leading to the N2. I always take my camera with me and take photos of who ever I meet along the road.  They normally ask me to take photos of them, especially the kids of course.  Today was that promised day when I would go with all the printed photos that I got done in Umthatha.  I’d have to look for all the people on the photos or sometimes just give a bunch to someone in the area that knows who’s who.  It’s always great to see how excited people are when they receive their photos.

I sometimes ask them if they can pay me R4/R5 for a photo, if I’ve taken a couple of the same people.  (That’s what it costs me to print – Umthatha aint cheap with their photos!) A lot of the people want to do a couple of different poses and then pose with this friend and that friend.  It works out pretty expensive for me at the end of the day.  But I know that R5 for them is a lot and most of the time they just don’t have it.  So I just give them the photos anyway.  I think there are a couple of mamas who might actually give me some money sometime soon.

Anyway, today I was looking for some people an asked one mama if she saw them.  She had a look at the photos and said she’d also like photos of her family.  She lived a little bit of a walk from the road, so normally I won’t really get to those people unless they take me there.  This mama was very nice and seemed that I’ve met her before but can’t be sure.  When we got to her place, the 3 little kids were just on their way to school, so I just took a quick picture of them.  Inside one hut was her daughter giving her little boy a wash in the tub.

He was quite curious of me and didn’t mind me taking a picture.  Sometimes these little ones freak out a bit and start crying when they see an ‘umlungu’ because they’ve never seen a white person before in their life.  Later on he started getting real cute, dancing around and wanting to grab my camera.

I was real impressed with this hut.  It was so neat and got nice light and they had a table and chairs in the middle.  A lot of the huts are very dark.  The mama gave me some qnush (samp and beans) to eat and later got me a bunch of spinach from the garden – that’s becoming a regular thing now!  I do love spinach and you can guess what I had for dinner…

This afternoon I spent just a little bit of time with my 3 kids, Asefika, Snooks and Josh.  They were all especially dirty today for some reason, don’t know where they were playing.  But it was worth it having to wash my jeans again tomorrow just to have the three of them fighting over who’s sitting on my lap for 5 minutes.

Josh and Asefika disappeared and Snooks asked me to drive her home in my car.  Her home is literally 2 minutes up the road, but I drove super slowly for her to get the best of the experience. When we drove off, she asked how I knew it was really my car, so I pretended for a while that maybe it wasn’t my car and we had lots of laughs about what would happen if I took the wrong car.   She didn’t really want to get out and looked for all sorts of things that interested her in my car.  I had a little pamphlet of Port St Johns, about 4 hours north of Coffee Bay.  She wanted to know exactly where we are and where we lived.   And then she said she really felt like eating something nice.  I keep a couple of peppermints in my car which she’d never had before so we sat there sucking on that and listening to Hillsong on my tape player.  She said she’ll go when the song is finished.  I know she wasn’t even really listening to the music, she just liked hanging out in my car.

She’s such a clever girl and her English is also improving daily.  I was thinking today that she could really get far in life.  I hope she gets the right opportunities in the future.  She’ll be starting to go to the big school next year, as she turned 6 recently.  She’s going to be the most advanced kid in her class.  I hope that works out well for her.

090611, Tuesday

My boys didn't pitch up for their class this afternoon, I suspect the ocean might have tempted them away... So I took advantage of the moment, and got one of the ladies to take me into one of the villages in search for a mama who knows how to sow and make skirts.  My idea is that she makes one for me and if it comes out nice, I can perhaps order more from her and we can sell them to the tourists.  Anyway, we never found the mama, but left the material and an example skirt for her to find.  I was happy to bump into some beautiful people from the village though, and of course became a bit happy snappy...

040911, Sunday

Mydog is still here and doing much better today.  This morning he was walking around in the campsite and exploring his surroundings.  I gave him a bit of a wash with a cloth and soapy water and I might be wrong, but I think he quite enjoyed that experience.  Then I took him for a little walk on the beach and he walked almost like a normal dog.  He even had a little run. On the way back I could see he was tired again, so back home he went straight for another nap.  But I think he's doing so much better, I might not even take him all the way to the vet tomorrow.  He even took the brave step up into my caravan and is now asleep on the floor next to my bed...  I'm enjoying the company.

Otherwise not much news, just had another friendly Indian man bringing me chicken curry for breakfast this morning.

Mydog asleep in my tent...

020811, Friday evening

Just had supper, fried brinjal and spinach.  Nice.  Listening to Mr Clegg.  You know, that old eighties album, ‘Scatterlings of Africa’, ‘Oh Siyeza’ etc.  Classic.  Makes you want to pack up your little caravan and head deeper into Africa…

So, Mydog is still here and again fast asleep in his new little bed under my kitchen table.  He’s still in pain, but did well today.  When I got up he was standing outside sniffing the plants and would go for a little walk around the caravan every once in a while before finding a new spot to sleep in the sun.   I phoned my ‘landlord’ and told him about the situation and he said it’s no problem for the dog to stay, so I did a little happy dance.  (Happy dances are quite common to be found around here this week for some reason…)

Mydog ate every now and then and slept the whole rest of the time.  I spent the day working on photos and later went for a walk.  He didn’t even notice that I left and when I got back he had only shifted to another position.  It took some persuading with nice smelling food to get him inside the tent again and back to his warm little bed, but now there he is.  Covering his face with his paw and trying to sleep while I’m blasting Johnny Clegg over the airwaves.  Tomorrow I’ll try to take him with me when I go teach, that’s if I’m going to get him in the car again, I suspect it might not be that easy…

1 September, Spring day

Went to the Christian school today to hear how things are going to work out.  It turns out that they can only pay me R1 500 a month at the most… (They rely on the children’s school fees to pay the teachers and it appears that many parents struggle to pay that)

That puts me in a difficult situation.  Cause I’m quite excited to go and teach there, I’ll only be teaching Afrikaans and English and perhaps later Arts and Culture – that might be fun.  I think I’ll be able to make a difference and I think it will be good for me too, to have a routine thing going again here and spend my time with the school children.   Anyway...

MYDOG

I told you he was back after being missing for 2 months!?  Well, today I saw him lying there and went over to him and saw that something wasn’t quite right.  He didn’t want to get up and didn’t want me to touch his legs.  Then I saw that he was really hurt and could hardly get up.  Later, when he wanted to lie down again, it was so painful for him that he kept going in a circle to build up the courage to lie down.

I asked Sarah to bring him some food from the dogs at Bomvu and it was clear he was really hungry.  He’s really skinny and not looking too good.  Then he just lay there and seemed afraid of everyone walking past him too closely.  Eventually I just couldn’t leave him there so I brought my car closer so he could get in.  It was a bit of a mission to get him in, cause he’s really in pain.  There are no scars, but I suspect something might be broken.  He just lay down on the seat and seemed relieved to be out of the chaos.  When I got home, he seriously couldn’t get out of the car, I tried to lift him, but at some point he would even start to growl at me, very out of his character.  Then I opened the tin food that Sarah gave me and when the poor thing smelled that he had to do his best to wobble out of there.

I put a blanket for him in my tent and fed him a panado with the tin food.  After he ate, he went to lie down and passed out solidly for almost 3 hours.  He woke up later and I gave him some of my soup.  He hasn’t gotten up yet.  He’s sleeping again now, so I hope tomorrow he’ll feel better.  I’ll only be able to take him to the SPCA  in Umtata on Monday… I hope he’s going to make it this weekend.  I don’t know what my landlord will think of this situation, but for now the dog is immobile.

310811, Wednesday, double, triple blessings….

Busi and the sleeping Sezah after a long day...

Who's that peeking into my caravan...?

Orange eating fairies in my garden.....

Today was really a great day, but let me start with yesterday.  Woke up yesterday morning and noticed a fogginess on my mirror and thought to myself, sho did I breathe that much last night?  Then I went outside and saw a general fogginess hovering in the air and into the distance.  Then I started to realize what it must be.  Something I knew existed and experienced before, but have conveniently completely forgotten about.  Humidity.  Are you friend or foe?  I’m guessing the latter.

Firstly my veggies are just wanting to rot in a much too hurried space of time, everything gets sweaty and moldy.  Secondly and potentially disastrously, is the effect it might have on my camera…  Humidity can drastically affect one’s technology in a bad way that insurance probably certainly don’t cover.  Anyway, I’ve googled some precautions and I’ll be really careful.  Luckily I only use 1 lens most of the time, so that’s good- to change lenses as little as possible or even better, never.

Then last night the wicked and wild wind woke up and came for an uninvited visit.  I woke up around 3am and couldn’t sleep again till about 7.  I had to go out, move my car into the best wind-blocking position for what it’s worth and take out some poles and tie down my tent’s side and frontal ‘flaps’ to prevent the wind from turning my tent into an eagle that wants to soar off into the night.

Luckily by now I’m well practiced with my little torch and hammer and know just what to do.  Even with that peace of mind it was impossible to sleep with the wind shaking my whole caravan like a smartie box and making really scary sounds just to say that it can do whatever it feels like. “I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down…”   I can’t help thinking that one day the wind is going to do just that.  These are the only times that I wish to live in a house, the rest of the time I just love my little caravan.

Today.  The boys are building their new hut this week, so I didn’t teach them today.  I took advantage of that idea and invited my friends Sarah, Capri, Josh, Busi and Snooks over to come and play at the caravan in the afternoon.  Asefika is sick in bed…  Snooks have been nagging for a while now and it’s never been the right opportunity before.  So, I had 3 little fairies come to play today.  I bought a bag of oranges on the way and they couldn’t get enough.  We played in the caravan till everyone got bored of that, then went outside and played some bats and ball– style cricket.  That was super fun and I hope we’re going to do loads more of that in the time to come.

Later I took everyone home and on the way back picked gave a lift to some beading ladies.  I took them the extra bit up the hill and got a nice specially picked garden -fresh bunch of spinach as reward.

When I got home, my new construction worker neighbors, two Indian guys from Durban, brought me some neatly packaged delicious fish curry.  It felt like I had a special delivery from Bhukara…  (Oh and this morning they also brought me some bread and butter pudding! Mmmmm)  I’m getting really spoilt aren’t I!

I‘ve already been soaking my lentils since this morning, so I made my soup as well tonight, I can always refrigerate it.  I put in my fresh spinach and had a little now, it’s especially delicious today as well!

Oh, by the way, did I mention that I might start helping out at the Christian school in Coffee Bay sometime soon?  Teaching grade 6-9s… That will be interesting!  Will just need to finalize that.  It’ll take a lot of my time, but perhaps will be well worth it!
